Orange County Deck Installation & Landscaping

Featured Project: Laguna Beach Deck Remodel
Perched above the Pacific Ocean in Laguna Beach, California, this custom residential project involved the construction of a 700-square-foot elevated deck on an exceptionally steep hillside. With neighboring homes approximately 100 feet below the slope, the project demanded meticulous planning, specialized structural support, and carefully controlled material handling throughout every phase of construction.
Completed over four months, the project transformed a challenging hillside location into a distinctive outdoor living space, featuring composite decking and a half-inch tempered glass guardrail system designed to preserve the surrounding ocean views.

Scope of Work
The project included the construction of a 700-square-foot elevated deck supported by custom-fabricated structural steel and substantial concrete foundations. The work required specialized access solutions, temporary work platforms, controlled lifting operations, and careful coordination of deliveries due to the property's steep terrain and restricted access.

Key Project Challenges
Extreme Hillside Conditions: The deck was constructed on a slope of approximately 30 degrees, creating significant challenges for worker access, equipment placement, and material handling. Multiple temporary scaffold platforms had to be built to establish level working surfaces and provide safe, practical access during construction.
Precision Material Handling and Safety: With residential properties situated approximately 100 feet below the work area, preventing materials from sliding down the hillside was a critical priority. Large framing sections were carefully lowered into position using winches, helping maintain control of heavy components and protect the homes below.
Restricted Rear-Yard Access: Access to the deck construction area was limited to a passage approximately three feet wide and seven feet high. Transporting oversized framing members and heavy steel components through this narrow opening required careful planning, additional handling, and considerable labor.
Difficult Site Logistics: The property was located on an extremely steep road at a sharp corner, complicating concrete deliveries and vehicle maneuvering. Concrete trucks were limited to half-capacity loads to accommodate the challenging grade, while three personnel were assigned to traffic control during deliveries to help manage access and site safety.

Structural Construction
The deck's foundation and support system required substantial structural components to accommodate the elevated hillside installation:
Concrete foundations: Three columns, each approximately nine feet deep and 24 inches wide, were excavated and filled with concrete to establish the deck's foundation.
Custom steel supports: Three purpose-built triangular steel supports, each measuring approximately 9 by 11 feet and weighing 300 pounds, were installed atop the concrete columns.
Heavy structural framing: Major framing components included large beams measuring approximately 8 inches wide, 20 inches deep, and 32 feet long. Their size and weight required carefully coordinated transportation, positioning, and installation.
Composite decking: Composite decking planks provided the finished walking surface, offering a contemporary appearance and a practical outdoor-living finish.
Tempered glass guardrails: A half-inch tempered glass railing system completed the deck while maintaining clear sightlines toward the ocean.

Project Execution
The four-month construction process required close coordination between foundation work, custom steel installation, structural framing, and finish construction. Temporary scaffold platforms provided workable surfaces on the steep slope, while winch-assisted placement helped control the movement of large framing sections.

Every delivery and material movement had to be considered in relation to the narrow access route, steep roadway, limited truck capacity, and occupied homes below the construction area.

The combination of difficult terrain, oversized structural components, and restricted access made this project a demanding example of specialized residential construction.

Completed Project
The finished 700-square-foot deck provides an elevated outdoor living area overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Composite decking and transparent tempered glass guardrails complement the coastal setting, allowing the ocean views to remain the focal point.
Project Duration: Four months
Project Type: Single-family residential
Location: Laguna Beach, California 92651
Deck Area: 700 square feet
Primary Features: Custom steel supports, deep concrete foundations, heavy structural framing, composite decking, and tempered glass guardrails
